When the handoff goes sideways mid-panel

Last Friday, my partner’s audio died on Zoom RSI during a biotech Q&A, and I had to carry seven minutes solo at roughly 170 wpm. I throttled the output, signaled the moderator between breaths, and prioritized numbers and verbs to keep the spine — what quick triage move do you use to maintain quality without redlining?

And i stay with ‘numbers + verbs’ but cap sentences at 7–9 words, drop modifiers, and mark caveats with ‘roughly’ to keep accuracy. I also keep a pre-typed ‘handoff pls — audio down’ in chat and take a micro-pause every 15 seconds to stop creeping speed — interpreter low‑power mode. If your partner pops back mid-sentence, land on a full stop and let them pick up the next clause.

My quick triage is a 10‑second ‘chunk and reset’: deliver one compact summary, breathe, flash the Zoom hand, and anchor numbers, units, and negations so errors don’t snowball. If the tempo is insane, I’ll ask @host for a brief ‘hold while I summarize’ and switch to low‑power mode — drop modifiers, keep names/outcomes — like flying on one engine. When the partner’s back, a 5‑second micro‑recap (‘since X, Y happened, total Z’) stitches it together.
